Mental Health Support in
Hambleton and Richmondshire has a history of involvement in
providing a range of day support services for people experiencing
mental health problems spanning twenty-five years.

This contribution to care and support for this disadvantaged group
of people first emerged as a grassroots response by self-taught
individuals who recognised the need for support at home or in the
community for those leaving the former ‘asylums’ and for others who
would not in future spend long periods in hospital.
In the early years the support given was of an informal nature and
comprised small day centres, social clubs and befriending, as well
as assistance to carers.
In the mid 1980s MHS registered as a charity because the scope and
scale of its involvement was increasing. By the mid 90s the skills,
experience and reputation gained led to MHS becoming a significant
voluntary sector provider of day support services for people aged
over eighteen. As such MHS has had continuous contracts since then
with the Hambleton and Richmondshire Primary Care Trust and North
Yorkshire County Council Social Services to provide such support for
over 250 people at any one time.

MHS operates over one thousand square miles in the northern part of
North Yorkshire. Its areas of benefit span the Hambleton and
Richmondshire Districts which have a population of 130,000
comprising market towns and widely dispersed and sparsely populated
upland and rural areas.
